One of the keystone areas of all of Zone 6, and one of the few places that packs this much into one patch of desert.
The Zen area is a rare all-in-one: world-class rope climbing on the Zen Wall, sandstone bouldering, the walk-in Zen Caverns, and the famous Zen Trail singletrack cutting right through the middle of it. You can climb, ride, and explore on foot without ever moving your car, which is a big part of why this area is so beloved, and so worth protecting.
The Zen Wall: sport & rope climbing
The centerpiece is the Zen Wall, a world-class crag built around a striking 90-foot vertical wall that runs along its length. For decades, guiding companies have used this wall to bring revenue into the area and introduce people to rock climbing, and many of those first-timers return year after year, keeping a lasting connection to St. George.
Bouldering
The Zen area isn't only about ropes. Scattered sandstone boulders give climbers problems to work close to the trail, so a rope day and a bouldering session can happen side by side in the same visit.
The Zen Caverns: easy cave exploration
Tucked into the area are the Zen Caverns, offering genuinely rare easy and safe cave exploration that families and first-timers can enjoy without ropes, permits, or technical skills. Bring a headlamp, tread lightly, and leave the caves as you find them.
The Zen Trail: singletrack through the heart
The celebrated Zen Trail mountain-bike route cuts right through the heart of the area, tying the whole place together. It is technical, rocky, and a bucket-list ride in its own right, and it puts riders within reach of the climbing, the boulders, and the caves all at once.
Why it matters
Few places let you climb a world-class wall, pull on boulders, explore caves, and ride legendary singletrack in a single afternoon. The Zen area is a keystone of Zone 6, and of the local recreation economy built around it. Keeping this ground public keeps all of it open for the next generation.
